It feels like I am back in my childhood and I am learning to walk and to run. It is hard, but fun. Of course it is not really like this, but I am going back to the basics with my running. I mentioned this before, but I changed my training and running to use the MAF method for my running now. I did a lot of research after not really progressing with my running performance. For one I was not really making progress to get faster, but I was also plateauing in my efforts to reduce the amount of body fat that I am carrying around. I ran my first ultra-marathon just about a week ago and due to the outside circumstances I pushed the limits on my existing Garmin Forerunner 220. The GPS watch is rated to provides about 8 hours of battery life while in use during running and by the time I finished the 50K race I was down to 12%. Now I am ready to tackle my first 50 mile ultra-marathon and while my existing GPS watch is good for my training runs for now, coming closer to the race and for the race itself it is not sufficient enough. What is your favorite Running Shoe?
First there was the Nike Pegasus running shoe for me and I ran several marathons and half-marathons using the Nike Pegasus, but somehow my love for the Nike shoes has gone cold. The main reason is that they simply do not last long enough and when you run 40-50 miles a week the cost of buying new shoes all the time is just prohibitive. I briefly had a love affair with the New Balance 880 running shoe, but these are hard to find locally or at my favorite online running shoe retailers and I hate paying full retail for running shoes. Then I tried the Mizuno Wave Rider 17 and 18, but I now hate them with passion. This is the one and only shoe company that seems to be out trying to hurt me. Then I went to my local running shoe store and tried out the Brooks Ghost 8 and what a difference. The Brooks Ghost 8 seems like it was made just for me. I am already on my 3rd pair of the Ghost and I know that will not be the end – hopefully for quite a long time. [Read more…]
