A while ago I bought the SJ Ultra Running Vest 2.0 from Ultimate Direction. I wore it during the Little Rock Marathon and have been using it on my long training runs as well. One problem I always had on long runs is the amount of water or Gatorade I am able to carry. My very first running belt was a Nike belt that allowed to carry one 16 oz. bottle and that was it. As you can imagine that did not work well on longer runs. Then I switched to a Fitletic running belt with a total of four 8oz bottles which worked pretty well most of the time, but on warmer days I had to either carry an extra bottle of Gatorade or stop during my run and get a refill somewhere. The Ultimate Direction running vest changed this because it comes with two 20 oz. bottles and I can store extra bottles inside the backpack or add a reservoir to the pack. So, carrying liquids as a runner is pretty important and having options available that match up with your runs is awesome.
Please welcome: Ultimate Direction BODY BOTTLE PLUS
While it is running season for me all year long, for many people their running season starts in early Spring and lasts until late Fall. The fine folks at Ultimate Direction spent their “off season” developing new products and one of those is the new Body Bottle Plus (affiliate link). It is a replacement bottle that fits into ALL their running vests or packs that have bottles by default. The new bottle allows to be filled with up to 17 oz. of water or whatever sports drink you like, but then it offers so much more. A normal bottle starts shloshing once you start drinking from it and it is no longer filled to the top. The Ultimate Direction body bottles prevent shloshing which makes your run quieter and overall more convenient. In addition the new body bottle comes with a larger opening and so you can add ice cubes or more easily fill it with your powdered energy/protein drink of choice. And since it is a soft bottle it conforms with your body when carrying it in your running vest = less bouncing, less shloshing, and less rubbing.
What I really like about this new bottle is the softness and the fact that it “shrinks” with reduced liquids inside the bottle. It makes a heck of a difference in my opinion – just think the increased running comfort you gain from this type of bottle. Currently with having two regular bottles I always try to equally drink from each of the two bottles that I carry to load-balance the weight and of course to keep the shloshing at a tolerable level, but with the new bottle I would not have to do it the same way. I also like this new bottle because I can store one or two more comfortably in the backpack portion of my SJ Ultra Vest – reducing the impact on back and again making my run more comfortable that way. While I am excited about the new Ultimate Direction Body Bottle Plus in many ways, I wish they would have made the bottle in other sizes as well, but that is really just a minor issue for me.
I know many folks are replacing or upgrading their water bottles based on seeing the reviews for other products on the Ultimate Direction website. Noise and comfort are important issues when heading out for long runs. So, I assume that this new Ultimate Direction Body Bottle Plus will fit the bill. I have not tried it, but I would assume that these new bottles work in running vests of other vendors as well. Most standard bottles have the same size (unless I am mistaken) and so these new bottles could be a great option there as well. The bottle is reasonably priced at $22.95 (click here to see product page / affiliate link). What will take on your next long run – be it trail or or road?
