Back in December I ran a local Half Marathon race (Fa La La Half Marathon) and it was freaking cold back then. How cold you ask? It was in the low single digits when the race started and it was still in the low single digits when I crossed the finish line. Yes, that’s how cold it was. While I have cold weather running gear, I did not have the right stuff for a 2 hours+ race that was held in those arctic-like temperatures.
Update: I did a follow-up review here.
I needed to either upgrade my winter running gear or get some additional running gear to fill the gap. The race package pick-up was held at a local running store and I was hoping to pick up some better thermal running tights as well as thermal sweatshirt of some sort. Man, that was disappointing – all I found at the store was for temperatures at around 30 degrees, but nothing that was officially labeled for sub-freezing temperatures. So, on the way back home I stopped at a Dick’s Sporting Goods Store and was pleasantly surprised about their collection of winter fitness gear. I picked up a pair of Nike Combat Pro tights and I picked up a Nike Hyperwarm Dri-FIT long-sleeve sweatshirt. I wore both during the race and was pleasantly surprised how good my new outfit worked.
This is a review about the NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT Fitted Crew Long-Sleeve Top.
As mentioned I originally wore this NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT Fitted Crew Long-Sleeve Top or sweatshirt as part of my outdoor running gear during a very cold half marathon race. I actually wore 4 layers to protect my upper body from the cold temperatures, but I was specifically impressed with this Nike garment. Two days before the race I went for a final run and I tried a different combination of clothing to figure out what to wear during the race. I have to say I felt quite cold using just my existing running gear and knew I had to add some additional clothing. That night I purchased the Nike Dri-FIT Hyperwarm Sweatshirt and added it to my running gear for the race and while the temperatures were the same during the race and during my last training run, I definitely felt warmer and not just because of the additional layer of clothing. I used this sweatshirt several times since then and while it took some experimenting I quickly figured that this new piece of fitness gear made a heck of a difference. On cold days (not as cold as the race day for the half marathon) I could leave one layer of clothing at home when I was wearing the Nike Hyperwarm sweatshirt. I also wear it inside my house occasionally because it really helps to get me warm when coming inside on a cold day.
The NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT Fitted Crew Long-Sleeve Top is advertised to wick sweat from your skin – accordingly you can compare it to other “technical” fitness clothing. I usually wear a technical T-Shirt underneath and at the end of a long run I can feel the difference this type of clothing provides. The T-Shirt is almost dry while the other layers like the Nike sweatshirt feel wet and more sweaty, but only on the outside. The inside where it touches my skin or the technical T-Shirt feels dry as well. The Nike sweatshirt is definitely doing a great job in absorbing the sweat and to wick it away from my body and therefore is exactly what I need during winter time.
I like the tight fit of this NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT sweatshirt. I like the soft material and I feel really comfortable with the snug fit. Now, don’t get me wrong, but I have seen some not-so-skinny people wear this type of clothing and it looks ridiculous. Yes, it sits that tight around your upper body and it does NOT hide anything. As mentioned I like the tight fit of the Nike Men’s Hyperwarm sweatshirt quite a bit, but I do not fall into the “oversized” category. It sits tight, but it provides enough freedom at the same time. I would not say that it feels like a compression shirt and that’s not what it is supposed to be anyway, so if you are in the market for a compression shirt – this is not it. It just needs to sit snug around your upper body to keep you warm. Since I work out quite a bit this sweatshirt actually shows the good body proportions like arms, chest, and shoulders. Not saying that is a benefit, but if you are into that kind of thing this sweatshirt does a great job accordingly.
I have the yellow one and it almost makes the impression you can see from space when being outside – it’s that bright. Do yourself a favor and take it off before you eat something like Spaghetti. Even a small tiny dot of tomato sauce on the shirt sticks out like crazy. I learned my lesson and will not wear it at the table again.
I wash it with all my other clothes in the washing machine – no special treatment. However, I do not wash it after every use and if I do wash it, it will not go into the dryer ever. I let it air-dry at all times to avoid that strange smell that you get from technical clothing sometimes when it goes through the dryer. I do not know if the heat in the dryer affects the fabric in those cases, but the NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT sweatshirt has turned into my favorite sweatshirt and I am not going to ruin it by putting it into the dryer.
I love the NIKE Men’s Hyperwarm 2.0 Dri-FIT sweatshirt Fitted Crew Long-Sleeve Top. It has easily turned into my favorite fitness sweatshirt. The list price is a bit steep at $50.00, but I am planning on picking up one or two more towards the end of the season. A large nation-wide retailer already has it on sale for under $40.00 a piece, but I would expect prices to go down towards the $30.00 range soon.
