The Christmas Holiday is behind us and I am back at work. Of course for quite a few people the “holiday” continues and they are heading out to the mall today. During my commute to and from work I pass a large shopping mall and I can see the parking lot from the highway while driving by. On Monday afternoon the parking lot was packed and I am sure today will not be different. I am always amazed how much stuff people need to buy for Christmas – be it presents or whatever else. I do not mind presents, but going to the mall on the day after Christmas – that sounds more like a horror movie to me. I always try to buy online, but in general we’re keeping a low shopping profile in our family by not going overboard with presents.
Yesterday we followed out Christmas tradition and drove up to Evergreen (CO) where we walked around (and on) the lake. Evergreen is a beautiful mountain town here in Colorado and it is about 45 minutes away from Denver. They have this nice lake in the middle of town and of course it freezes over in Winter. They set up fields for ice hockey and of course they prepare several skating rinks for normal ice skating as well. Other areas of the lake are being used for ice fishing. People drill holes into the ice, setup a small tent, and then do ice fishing. I am not into fishing, so I cannot tell how exciting it might be to catch a fish but I understand it is a hobby for many and you can tell it is when you see how many people are actually doing it.
So, we went up to the lake and walked around the lake and of course my son wanted to walk on the frozen lake itself, too. It was fun, but we had a few moments where the ice was making noise and it did not make us feel very comfortable. Don’t get me wrong – the ice was very thick and it was not cracking under out weight, but it makes noise and we wanted to play it safe by staying closer to the shore. After our walk we went back home to warm up. Temperatures in Evergreen were about at about 20 degrees at the time we were up there. We had a nice Christmas lunch and coffee. My son played with his new toys while my wife and I enjoyed a nice cup of coffee.
The Christmas Workout
Christmas Eve was very windy and so the wind had blown tons of pine needles of our trees and the grass and the driveway were pretty much covered with pine needles. It was nice and sunny outside so I actually went outside and did some yard work – cleaning up from the pine needles. I am sure I ticked off some neighbors by doing this type of thing on Christmas Day, but life is busy and I do not always have the opportunity to do those type of things on the weekends either due to bad weather or other time commitments. Anyway – I enjoyed working in the sunny front yard and within 45 minutes everything looked nice again. Yard work is kind of like working out and that is the only why I do like doing yard work. I am not doing it because I like doing yard work, but I see the fitness benefit it gives me and so that works out both ways. Since I was a bit dirty and full of dust I decided to head out for a run. I ran for 6 miles. The weather was perfect and so all I needed were shorts and a T-Shirt for this run. The sunshine kept me warm and I picked a route that would keep me in the sunshine for most of the time.
Below are some more pictures from the Lake in Evergreen.
