On Sunday evening I could feel it coming already, but it really hit me hard on Monday night. I am down and out with a really bad head cold. I am mad. Less than two weeks to go and I am sick with something that simply sucks all the energy out of my body. I barely slept from Monday to Tuesday and for the first time in years I cold into the office and took a sick day. I actually went in before 6 AM because I had to finish up something that required my physical attention and then left again. I came home, ate something and then went back to bed where I slept for the next 4-5 hours. My nose/sinuses are plugged and stuffy and I feel totally congested. I have a really bad headache and the headache seems to laugh at the medication I am taking.
I can tell where I got it from though. Over the last few days many people at the office were sick. When they’re healthy they never anything from me, but for whatever reason they all had something they needed from me in one way or the other and so I had plenty of exposure. Every time after having contact with somebody sick I went to wash my hands and my face, but I guess it simply was not good enough. I had a flu shot in late August, but a flu shot does not protect you from the different types of cold.
The picture above shows my approach or reducing the symptoms and to eventually help my body to get through this more quickly. I am not really hungry, but I have been forcing me to eat fruits (1 Apple, 2 Bananas) and I also ate some raw red bell peppers since they are load with vitamins and other good stuff. I am using a Neti Pot to rinse my nose about every 2 hours. I use it with a sodium/mineral pack and also add some lemon juice to the mix as it helps to fight bacteria in the sinuses.
I am really worried about the timing of this whole thing. I feel tired and have no energy. Hopefully I can make it through this in a week or less, but I am really worried what this does to my fitness. I am already at a point where I think about ditching any time goal other than running the marathon in less than 5 hours. The Las Vegas marathon has a 5 hour time limit and so I am pretty much just thinking to run it and finish and screw the time. I was hoping to go for 4 hours, but that was before I came down with this @#$% cold.
What do you do when you get sick? What remedies do you use and where you feel they help best?
