Winter is officially here – December 21st and the weather is behaving accordingly. It was chilly all day and this evening it started to snow again. We still have some snow on the ground from the last snow storm and this is just like topping it off. I don’t think we will get too much of this white stuff and according to the weather forecast there will be no white Christmas this year. Yes, we might have some snow on the ground, but it is not enough to qualify for a white Christmas.
I did get a small blister from my afternoon run on Thursday and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to run today, but fortunately some tender loving care in form of Cortizone 10 took care of the little blister. It was right under the big toe on my left foot and actually bothered me on every step. I did not run Friday, but had my normal boot camp style workout at Kosama which was a good choice. I burnt a ton of calories – at least that is what the heart rate monitor told me and the impact on my foot was manageable.
This morning I drove down to the German store in Colorado Springs to pick up some goodies. We go there once a quarter probably and then indulge on German sausage, rolls, deli meat, and of course way too much German Chocolate. Well, a runner needs some motivation and keeping the weight off after such a food attack is definitely motivation for me. I am actually pretty good in keeping my eating under control when we go there, I am just not sure how all that good food disappears so fast. It’s almost like someone is sleep walking or better sleep eating. 😉
I had some of that good food for lunch and then took a quick break before getting my running gear out. The blister did not bother me anymore and I wanted to get a long run in today. Since I want to run a couple half marathons early next year and also stay in shape before starting my next marathon training cycle, a long run was needed and I was actually eager to get out and get it done. The weather was cold, but Ok cold when I left. Temperatures were around 30 and the sun was actually out a little bit, too. Overall it looked Ok and so I dressed appropriately. What I did not expect (dummy me) was that the weather apparently did not listen to the forecast and it became overcast and breezy and my formerly appropriate clothing turned out to be not enough. I got really cold in between and my legs even felt stiff because of it – think robot running style. I also had the impression that my shoes did not like the temperatures and they kept running a fast pace in the second half of today’s run.
Oh yeah – the run. I actually did do a half marathon distance run today – no race, no competition – just mother nature against me. I ran a new course and I think I picked one with too much uphill in the first half of run. Literally – until I hit the half way marker the entire run was pretty much uphill. I hated it and then actually loved it, but not for the reason of running downhill on the way back. I’d rather think that if I repeat this run many times that this turns into great strength training and ultimately will help me with running marathons. I now have to figure out how far I can extend this run on the given course so that it can turn into a nice 20 miler for long marathon training runs. I am sure I will find out, but I will make sure I make a better choice when picking the right clothing for this type of weather.
I came home today and the first thing I did was to mix a recovery shake. The second thing I did was to turn on the gas fireplace and “roast myself” for 20 minutes straight until I felt warm enough to take a shower. I stayed 10-15 minutes in the shower and sent the water heater into over-time before stepping out of the shower to get dressed. Then I made a good cup of coffee and sat down on the couch to rest a little bit. I do not mind cold-weather runs, but often it is a gamble of what to wear and today my gamble did not pay off. Tough luck!
This even I analyzed my run and looked at the splits and it turned out to be a prime example for a negative split run. I am very happy about the overall time and the average pace. I ran 13.13 miles in 1:59:03 and that translates into an average pace of 9 minutes and 4 seconds per mile. My legs felt tired after the run, but I blame the long stretch of uphill running and I hope that with repeat uphill running training this will change.
Here are the splits for today.
