When I woke up this morning it was not pleasant outside as you can see from the picture on the left. We had about half an inch of snow in the drive way and I actually used a broom to clear out the driveway and the path to the front door. It was a very powdery snow – I assume due to the low humidity and the frigid temperatures. I left home at 4.40 AM to go to Kosama for my morning workout. The roads were a bit icy, but nothing major and so I arrived quite early. Only one other guy showed up for the workout and so it was a very small class of just two people and the coach today.
The workout was great and I burnt almost 700 calories according to my heart rate monitor. It was circuit training today and with that you just rotate through the different exercise stations. It was a mix of TRX, Kettle Bells, Cardio, and Plyometrics. Each exercise session was 45 seconds before moving on the next one and there were a total of about 18 exercise stations. Each exercise station had 3 types of exercises and so we rotated through the stations a total of 3 times to do all the exercises.
I love circuit training for many reasons. Circuit training is a certain method of resistance training and weight training. Circuit training maximizes the volume of work done in a short period of time and combines exercises for the whole body. So, there are cardio portions or weight portions where you work with Kettle Bells or Weight bars. There is no rest period between the stations and you only have a 45 second rest period between full sets of the rotation. It’s a great workout to build up cardiovascular strength and of course it is a great workout to burn lots of calories at the same time. Circuit training can be done in many different variations, but the way how Kosama does it seems really effective to me. Kirk, our coach and the owner of the local Kosama in Highlands Ranch is great in pushing you to make it through each set of an exercise and he also helps you to correct any mistakes you make. I admit, I sometimes have some slight coordination problems with some specific exercises and Kirk knows how to tease me in a very friendly way about it. It is a fun environment to work out.
Right after the morning workout I drove to work and used the gym in the office building I work at to take a shower and get dressed. It is a very small gym, but they have clean showers and it is convenient on days like this. Usually I head over to 24 Hour Fitness which is just half a mile down the road from Kosama and I use their showers, but today I wanted to avoid rush hour traffic due to the weather conditions. So, I hit the highway for a few miles shortly after 6.00 AM, but traffic was already bad and what usually takes 5 minutes for me turned into 15 minutes. Now, a few hours later I am looking outside and the snow is coming down hard. Usually I would work from home on such a day, but due to some important meetings with people from out of town (they came in yesterday) I had to be in the office in person. I hate when the “timing” is off so much.
I know my son tried hard yesterday, but all his “magical” efforts to force a school closure turned out to be not effective. Schools are open today (and rightfully though). I am sure he is disappointed, but that’s how life works.
